Life and Death Trade Places

Inspired by the following prompt: [WP] “Grim, Grim, please wake up. Please.” A woman’s voice woke up Grim, the Reaper saw that the woman beside his bed is Life. “Life? What happened?” As he sat up, he saw his hands are covered in flesh.

“Life? What happened?” As he sat up, he saw his hands were covered in flesh. He looked over and saw his wife was entire made of bones. “Is that meant to be today? I know the therapist said we had to walk a mile in each other shoes, but I think this is taking it too far.”

“No. We need to stick to the program and see this through,” replied an ethereal voice from the bones that used to be Life. “Now, hurry up and get out of bed. You need to get ready for work, and a body takes a lot more getting ready than a pile of bones. Oh, by the way, do you still have your old cowl from high school? You used to be so much skinnier then, and I think it would fit me perfectly.” Life strode off towards the closet.

Grim slowly got out of bed. Somehow this body generated more pops and creaks getting up than his usual one. Rubbing the sleep out of his eyes, he staggered to the bathroom to brush his teeth. At least, that part of this morning routine hadn’t changed.

“Make sure you comb your hair while your in there honey. I’d hate for you to look unkempt.” She was taking for too much joy in this.

On leaving the bathroom, Grim saw Life holding up a black cowl next to her skeleton.

She asked, “How do I look?”

“I think it looks great on you Honey.”

“Good answer. Here, let me help you pick out an outfit.”

Life opened another closet door, and Grim was assaulted with far more colors than he was used to seeing in a given week. Let alone from a single closet.

“Here,” said Life, “it’s going to be a casual day at the office today, so you can get away with wearing these jeans,” she threw the pair of jeans at him, “and a polo shirt,” followed by a turquoise polo shirt. “Let me know if you need any help getting them on; I’ll be getting breakfast ready.”

Grim pulled on his outfit for the day, pondering the necessity of two separate articles of clothing when his usual cowl would do just fine. Then, he left the bedroom for the kitchen, yelling out ahead, “One great thing about this body is that I get to smell your amazing cooking.”

Life yelled back, “I thought you were being nice about the outfit; now I know you’re just sucking up.”

On entering the kitchen, Grim hugged Life from behind and planted a kiss on her skull. “No really. I just love you. And this body just gives me even more reasons.”

Life rolled her eyes. “I’d blush if I could”

Grim looked at the time, “Not to rush perfection, but are you nearly done? I think we’ll both be late if we don’t hurry up.”

“Yup, just finished.”

After a rushed breakfast, during which Grim scalded the top of his mouth, the couple headed for the front door of their home.

Before heading their separate ways, Life said, “I know you’re going to do a great job today Grim.”

“Same goes for you Life. You’re going to kill it.”

And, with that crappy joke, they both went on their separate ways.
